Moving from the UAE
Moving out of the UAE by sea costs roughly AED 9,000–22,000 for a 2–3 BHK (≈AED 500–1,000 per cubic metre, door-to-door), with 7–14 days transit to the subcontinent. The UAE places few restrictions on your own used effects — the decisive factor is the destination’s customs regime, such as India’s Transfer of Residence concession (duty-free up to ₹7.5 lakh after ≥2 years abroad).

Leaving the UAE is mostly a customs exercise, not a cost one. By sea, a 2–3 BHK move runs roughly AED 9,000–22,000 door-to-door (about AED 500–1,000 per cubic metre with packing and insurance), and lands in 7–14 days to the subcontinent or longer to the West. The UAE places few restrictions on the used personal effects you take out — the rules that decide your move are at the destination end.
This guide covers what to ship, sell or bin; sea vs air vs shared container; leaving-the-UAE export rules and the India end’s Transfer of Residence concession, duty-free bands, gold and currency allowances; how to spot and avoid mover fraud; the documents you need; and a realistic timeline — so you can plan a move out of the UAE with confidence.

Ship it, sell it, or bin it?
Ship it
- High-value electronics & premium appliances
- Voltage-compatible goods — the UAE and India both run 220–240V / 50Hz
- Hard-to-replace, imported or sentimental items
- Custom / solid-wood furniture, instruments
- Good-quality clothing & linens
Sell it (in the UAE)
- Bulky furniture cheaper to rebuy at the destination
- Large appliances if the destination voltage differs
- Anything you've outgrown or rarely use
- Low-value goods not worth the freight and clearance
Bin / donate
- Worn-out or broken items
- Perishables, opened food, plants
- Hazardous: aerosols, batteries, paint, gas cylinders
- Half-used liquids — carriers refuse them anyway
Sea vs air vs shared container

The "port-to-port" trap: a port-to-port quote looks cheaper, but leaves you to handle destination customs clearance, terminal handling charges and final trucking yourself — surprise costs that often exceed the saving, plus any duty above the destination’s concession. Door-to-door bundles pickup, freight, both-end customs and delivery into one predictable price. All our quotes are door-to-door.
What you can & can't take out of the UAE
Take freely
- Used furniture, clothing, kitchenware, books
- Used electronics & appliances you own
- Personal jewellery (carry it on your person)
Restricted (declare / permit)
- Medicines — carry a prescription; some are controlled
- Hazardous: gas cylinders, paint, aerosols, flammables
- Large quantities that look commercial rather than personal
Prohibited (cannot export)
- Narcotics and controlled substances
- Ivory, protected wildlife products
- Counterfeit goods and certain media
If you are moving to India, the Transfer of Residence (TR) concession clears your used household effects duty-free up to ₹7.5 lakh after ≥2 continuous years abroad, with a named appliance list at a concessional duty rate. Keep proof of your time abroad and your visa-cancellation/relocation papers. Verify the current bands with Indian Customs/CBIC.
Into India you may carry up to ₹25,000 in Indian notes, and must declare foreign cash above US$5,000 or total forex above US$10,000. Gold jewellery is allowed by weight only — up to 40 g (female) / 20 g (others) duty-free. Confirm current RBI/FEMA figures before you travel.
Cancel your residence visa, close or settle utility, telecom and bank accounts, clear any loans (a visa cancellation can trigger loan settlement), and obtain salary-certificate / relocation proof — these double as the documents your destination customs and TR claim will need.
How to choose a verified mover (and avoid fraud)
- Quote far below all others
- No in-home / video survey
- No written, itemised estimate
- Demands large / 100% cash advance
- No verifiable physical office
- Can't show a real insurance policy
- Pressure to decide now
Get 3 door-to-door quotes and insist on an in-home or video survey.
Verify FIDI–FAIM, the UAE trade licence and the India-side GST/IBA in the official directories — not on the mover’s own site.
Demand a written, itemised, door-to-door contract and the actual insurance policy (number + insurer).
Pay digitally — a small advance (~10–25%), balance on delivery. Never 100% cash upfront.
On the UAE side, raise disputes with the mover’s emirate consumer-protection authority (e.g. Dubai’s Consumer Protection via Ministry of Economy, 600 522 225). For the India delivery leg, report to the National Consumer Helpline (consumerhelpline.gov.in · 1800-11-4000), payment fraud at cybercrime.gov.in, file an FIR, and approach the District Consumer Commission. Document everything with photos and screenshots.
The shipping line does not reimburse full value — its liability is capped and excludes "acts of God". Without your own cover, a lost or damaged shipment is largely on you. Budget ~1.5–3% of declared value (commonly 3%) for an all-risk policy on a valued inventory, and keep the actual policy document — understand the deductible and exclusions before signing.
