Moving to India Checklist: the complete relocation guide

A complete checklist for moving to India: documents, NRI finances under FEMA, household-goods shipping under Transfer of Residence, and your first weeks.

Assure Shift Editorial · Relocation specialists24 Jun 20268 min read

To move to India smoothly, start six to twelve months out and work five tracks in order: documents (passport, visa or OCI), finances (for returning NRIs, your tax-residency timing and redesignating your NRE/NRO accounts under FEMA), household-goods shipping under the Transfer of Residence concession, pet or vehicle if any, and a destination plan for your first weeks. Sea freight is the default for a full home, with a typical direct ocean leg of about three to five days between the Gulf and India's west coast and a few weeks door-to-door; air is for small, urgent items.

This checklist runs in that order so nothing is missed. It covers the timeline and the paperwork, the NRI banking and tax points that catch returning residents, what to ship versus sell versus buy, and how to settle in your first ninety days. For the duty-free rules in depth see our India customs & Transfer of Residence guide; for what a Gulf-to-India move actually costs, see the cost-to-move guide and the cost calculator. If you are moving from the Gulf, start with the Moving to India hub and the Dubai to Mumbai corridor.

Key takeaways
  • Start six to twelve months out and work five ordered tracks: documents, finances, household-goods shipping, pet or vehicle, then your destination plan.
  • Returning NRIs: do not just "convert NRE to NRO". On becoming resident, redesignate the NRE account as a resident account (or move funds to an RFC account) under FEMA; the NRO account is also redesignated to resident.
  • Your tax status on return is often Resident-but-Not-Ordinarily-Resident (RNOR) for a transitional period — confirm your position with a qualified tax professional.
  • Used household goods clear under the Transfer of Residence concession (Baggage Rules 2026). Keep an itemised, valued inventory and confirm the current bands with Indian Customs / CBIC.
  • Sea is the default for a full home (a direct ocean leg of about three to five days plus customs); air is for small, urgent items. A right-hand-drive Indian car move and pet import are handled on separate tracks.

The countdown: from six months out to arrival

6–12 months out

Plan & check your status

Confirm passport validity, visa or OCI, and — if you are a returning NRI — how long you have been abroad (it drives both your Transfer of Residence band and your tax status). Start gathering quotes and reading the customs rules early.

3–4 months out

Finances & paperwork

Plan the redesignation of your NRE/NRO accounts under FEMA for when you become resident, and speak to a tax professional about RNOR timing. Begin assembling documents: passport, visa/OCI, and the itemised valued inventory customs will need.

8–12 weeks out

Book your mover & mode

Take in-home surveys from two or three movers, get written door-to-door quotes, and choose sea for the bulk of a full home or air for an urgent essentials box. Lock pet (AQCS) or vehicle paperwork now if relevant — these have the longest lead times.

2–4 weeks out

Declutter, insure, confirm

Finalise what to ship, sell, donate or bin; arrange all-risk transit insurance; confirm packing and pickup dates and your destination address in India.

Moving week

Pack & ship

Supervise the packing inventory, keep an essentials box (consider air-freighting it), photograph high-value items, and hand over the keys.

On arrival

Clear customs & settle

Clear your shipment under Transfer of Residence with your inventory and documents, complete your banking redesignation, and start the first-90-days settling-in steps below.

Documents & NRI finances

Core documents

Valid passport; visa or OCI as applicable; an itemised, valued inventory for customs; bill of lading or air waybill; and ID/address proof for your destination in India. A car (right-hand-drive, restricted import) and a pet (AQCS clearance) are documented on their own tracks.

NRE/NRO accounts (FEMA)

On becoming a resident, redesignate your NRE account as a resident account, or transfer the funds to an RFC (Resident Foreign Currency) account, promptly under FEMA. Your NRO account is also redesignated to a resident account. This is a redesignation on return — not a simple "NRE to NRO" switch.

Tax status (RNOR)

Many returning NRIs qualify as Resident-but-Not-Ordinarily-Resident (RNOR) for a transitional period, during which foreign income is broadly not taxed in India — but it depends on your prior years abroad. Treat this qualitatively and confirm your exact position with a qualified tax professional.

Customs & Transfer of Residence

Used personal and household effects clear under the Transfer of Residence concession (Baggage Rules 2026), with the duty-free band scaling by how long you were abroad. The detail lives in the India customs & Transfer of Residence guide; confirm the current bands with Indian Customs / CBIC before you ship.

Customs & Transfer of Residence — 2026

When you bring a home into India, used personal and household effects clear under the Transfer of Residence (TR) concession set out in the Baggage Rules 2026 (in force from 2 February 2026). The duty-free value band scales with how long you were continuously abroad, with a separate general duty-free allowance, and goods above your allowance attract the applicable current duty. Eligibility also depends on not having availed TR recently and not having spent too long in India during the qualifying period.

The exact bands, the general allowance and the eligibility conditions are set out — with sources and as-of dates — in our India customs & Transfer of Residence guide. Always confirm the current figures with Indian Customs / CBIC before you ship, because thresholds and conditions are revised from time to time. Keep an itemised, valued inventory: it is the single document that makes clearance go smoothly.

What to ship, sell or buy

You do not have to move everything. A good rule is to ship what is quality, sentimental or genuinely hard to replace, sell or donate bulky low-value items, and buy on arrival anything that costs more to ship and clear than to re-buy in India.

  • Ship it: solid furniture, voltage-compatible appliances, books and kitchenware you use, and anything sentimental or high-value. India runs the same 230 V / 50 Hz mains as the Gulf, so your appliances work as-is — only plug types may differ.
  • Sell or donate it: bulky, low-value furniture; worn-out white goods; and duplicates. Selling before the survey shrinks your shipment volume, which is the biggest single driver of cost.
  • Buy it there: anything cheaper to re-buy in India than to ship, plus items that are restricted or impractical to import. A right-hand-drive Indian car can be moved but vehicle import is restricted — see car shipping before deciding. Pets travel on the AQCS track — see pet relocation.

Decluttering ruthlessly before the in-home survey is the highest-leverage thing you can do for your budget. Use the cost calculator to see how trimming volume changes the figure.

Your first 90 days in India

Arrival is the start of the settling-in track, not the finish line. Front-load the admin in your first weeks so the rest of the move feels easy.

  • Week 1: clear your shipment under Transfer of Residence with your inventory and documents, then check it in against your packing list and note any damage for an insurance claim before you sign off.
  • Weeks 1–4: complete your banking — redesignate your NRE/NRO accounts under FEMA — and book the tax-professional conversation about your RNOR status while it is fresh. Update your address and key registrations.
  • Months 1–3: set up utilities and connectivity, sort schooling or workplace logistics, and re-establish local essentials (healthcare, transport, insurance). If a pet or vehicle followed on a separate track, complete its clearance and registration in this window.

If you are moving from the Gulf, the Dubai to Mumbai corridor page and the Moving to India hub cover the route logistics, and the Moving from the UAE hub covers the exit side.

Moving to India checklist — FAQ

When should I start planning a move to India?
Start about six to twelve months out. Work five tracks in order: documents (passport, visa or OCI), finances (NRI banking redesignation and tax-status timing), household-goods shipping under Transfer of Residence, pet or vehicle if any, and your destination plan for the first weeks. Pet and vehicle paperwork have the longest lead times, so begin those early.
Do I convert my NRE account to an NRO account when I move back to India?
No. On becoming a resident, you redesignate your NRE account as a resident account, or transfer the funds to an RFC (Resident Foreign Currency) account, under FEMA. Your NRO account is also redesignated to a resident account. It is a redesignation on return rather than a simple NRE-to-NRO switch, so confirm the steps with your bank.
Will my foreign income be taxed when I return to India?
Many returning NRIs qualify as Resident-but-Not-Ordinarily-Resident (RNOR) for a transitional period, during which foreign income is broadly not taxed in India. Whether and for how long you qualify depends on your prior years abroad, so confirm your exact position with a qualified tax professional before you return.
How much can I bring into India duty-free when relocating?
Used personal and household effects clear under the Transfer of Residence concession in the Baggage Rules 2026, with a duty-free value band that scales by how long you were continuously abroad, plus a separate general duty-free allowance; goods above your allowance attract the applicable current duty. See our India customs and Transfer of Residence guide for the current bands and confirm them with Indian Customs / CBIC before you ship.
What documents do I need to clear customs in India?
The core set is a valid passport, your visa or OCI as applicable, an itemised valued inventory of your shipment, the bill of lading or air waybill, and ID and address proof for your destination. A car and a pet are documented separately, on the restricted vehicle-import track and the AQCS track respectively.
Should I ship my furniture and appliances or buy them in India?
Ship quality, sentimental and voltage-compatible items, and anything genuinely hard to replace; sell or donate bulky low-value furniture; and buy on arrival anything cheaper to re-buy than to ship and clear. India runs the same 230 V / 50 Hz mains as the Gulf, so your appliances work as-is.
